ABOUT THE COMPANY

TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is one of the largest tech companies in the world. They work behind the scenes with banks, hospitals, retailers and governments, keeping the technology those organisations rely on running smoothly. In the UK they sponsor the London Marathon.

They run this programme because they want young people from all kinds of backgrounds to understand what a career in tech can look like and to find out if it might be right for them.

What you will actually do

Each day has a different focus. Here is what the week looks like:

  1. Day 1: How the tech industry works

You will get an introduction to TCS, how a global tech company is structured, and the kinds of roles that exist. You will also meet your mentor and receive the brief for the project you will be building across the week.

You will leave knowing what the week involves and with a project to get started on.

  2. Day 2: Working through a real business problem

You will be given a brief the kind a junior analyst might receive and work through how you would approach it using a simple project management tool. Your mentor reviews your thinking by the end of the day.

You will leave understanding how tech professionals approach and structure problems.

  3. Day 3: Tech being used right now

TCS specialists will show you how technology is being applied in areas like sport, retail and healthcare, with specific examples. You will then have a go at building a basic data dashboard using a real tool and anonymised data. No coding experience needed.

You will leave having used a real industry tool and with a better sense of what tech work actually involves.

  4. Day 4: Q&A with people a few years ahead of you

A panel of TCS apprentices, graduates and career changers answer your questions about what they do day to day, how they got there, and what they wish they had known earlier. The session is unscripted. The afternoon is time to work on your project with mentor support.

You will leave with a clearer picture of what different routes into tech look like and which might interest you.

  5. Day 5: Present your project and get it signed off

You will give a short presentation of the project you have built across the week, covering what the brief was, how you approached it, and what you would do differently. Your mentor gives you written feedback.

You will leave with a completed project, written feedback, and your certificate.

Questions you might have

  • Yes. The project builds across the week so missing sessions will make it harder to complete. If something comes up, contact TCS as early as possible.
